Home Facelift

When we first moved into our small rental home in 2013, we had just gotten married and only had two children. The boys had their own bedroom and although it’s only 881 square feet, we managed to make it work. There were so many things that we fell in love with– the big back yard, the flat front yard, the patio, the trees, the red front door, the layout of the home, the hardwood floors, the spacious closets, and the fact that our washer and dryer would be downstairs for more living space upstairs. The house is in the most perfect location, we are the little white house on the corner. It’s funny because our driveway is in the back of the house which is on one road, the street that you turn on to get to the front of our house has another name, and then the front of our house is yet another street.

This is our driveway and the back yard

We moved out in 2014 so we could save the money that we had been spending on rent and to cut back the mileage on our vehicles. I was driving around 30 miles to work 5 days a week, another 30 miles home, and then my husband got a job that would require him to drive around 20 miles to work each morning and then again that afternoon. Once we moved, the kids were only 2 miles away from their school, I was just a 10 minute drive away from work, and Jordan only had to travel one interstate to get to work.

Our family had also grown. The 3 bedroom house was all we needed when we were a family of four, but once we brought our new baby home from the hospital, we had to share a bedroom with her. Her bed was packed into our bedroom and trying to find a place for all of her clothes, diapers, and other necessities was a struggle.

In the end, God will lead you to where He needs you to be. We were going through some hardships and Jordan drove by our first house one afternoon and sent me this picture.

We talked about the house often, how we missed it, and how fortunate we were to have had such a wonderful landlord. We loved the house and the memories we had made there. We knew some things needed to change in our lives and at the perfect time, God opened a door for us. We called our old landlord, asked about the house, and just a few weeks later we were moved in. Luckily he and his wife had missed us just as much as we had missed them. We paid our first rent check and moved in on May 1st. The same month we moved in the first time, only four years later.

One of the first things I noticed when we went by to look around before moving in the second time was how neglected the house looked. However, our landlord agreed to have it fixed up and had came to a decision to find someone to paint the house. After a few months with no luck, he decided to have siding put on instead and to have new windows installed as well. We were pleased with his decision and even more excited about the outcome!

We are happier than ever in this little white house on the corner with the red front door. We make the small space work for us. The boys share a bedroom and Klara now has her own room. We eat meals together at the kitchen table and squish together on our couch for movie night every weekend. You know what they say:

Love grows best in little houses with fewer walls to separate. Where you eat and sleep so close together you can’t help but communicate. If we had more room between us, think of all we’d miss. Love grows best in houses like this.

Thanks for stopping by the blog! Have a great day, friends.
